Feel like having some sake tonight with friends in a bar and enjoy Japanese cuisine.
Tokonoma could be one of the best choice for you.
Toko Restaurant & Bar are located Surry Hills and Paddington.
I went to their Bar Tokonoma for degustation which is just right next door to Toko restaurant.
As soon as you open the big wooden front door, through a collection of Japanese wine jar, the contemporary interior caught our eyes. The mixed of timber flooring, leather couch, dim lighting, marble bar bench and liquors creates a strong statement and luxurious factor. We couldn't wait for meal tonight!
After a warm greeting, we've been lead to our table.
Quickly, Japanese bean and complimentary wine were served while we waiting for our entree.
Course One
Thinly sliced kingfish, truffle oil, pork crackling
Port Crackling taste a bit like Thai roasted rice, which give a foreign twist to this traditional Japanese kingfish Sashimi dish.
Beef Tataki
This a very tasty dish with rarely cooked beef, pickled onions, mizuna, garlic chips and soy sauce topping.
crispy soft-shell crab
I love the wasabi mayonnaise comes with this dish. Sophisticated technique to balance wasabi within mayo sauce, even great for people who doesn't like wasabi.
course two
Sushi Roll
I love the round sushi. It's made of 3 type of raw fish mixed with fish roe and roll it with a thin layer of radish. (the white outskirt of the sushi) Complex of texture shows how much effort the chef has put in to plan this great experience to customers.
course three
Originality and flavor, this one scores the highest so far.
I love the hint of jalapeno garlic with shredded pickled apple on grilled scallop. As weird as this description sounds, the flavor is awesome. You should definitely try this one.
Lamb Cutlets
marinated lamb cutlets served with chilli miso and pickled eggplant (I personally don't understand the taste in raw pickled eggplant). Despite the eggplant, lamb cutlet is superbly cooked - tender and flavorsome.
Grilled zucchini with wafu sauce, sesame
course four
Miso Soup (I am sure you all know what miso soup looks like don't you? ^^)
course five
Chef's seclection of sorbet served on ice and apricot creme brulee.
I love the sourness from berry and the fruity sweetness in creme brulee. Don't you love the presentation?
Superb way of finishing a meal.
We bought this degustation on discount $100 for 2 people. Don't forget Tokonoma is a bar, do compare the menu with Toko restaurant. I am sure it will be a different experience.
Great place to take a special date to, it's very intimate but not too intense (cut through quiteness). Surrounding is very relax, customer are generally relaxed and friendly. We didn't get the chance to try their mixed cocktails, but I had a glance on few that came out of the bar....looks delicious!
Hopefully you all had a great weekend!
